Although your relationships may be different with each person, there are basic ways to create a healthy relationship that everyone can agree with.

Think of relationships (friendships, family, or boy/girlfriend, coworkers and classmates), as a recipe for something good. ALL relationships, in order to be healthy, require certain mix of ingredients such as:

  • Separate Identities

    • make sure each person has their own interests, lives, and spends lots of quality time away from each other with others they care about as well, not just you!

  • Good Communication

    • have face-to-face, vulnerable, non-judgmental, deliberate conversations and validate each others’ feelings

  • Fairness and Equality

    • work towards each persons’ own needs, not just your own; encourage each other, and both people put effort into the relationship

  • Mutual Respect

    • treat each person thoughtfully, courteously, and considerately

  • Trust

    • making sure you can rely on each other, are faithful and loyal to each other, and can confide in one another

  • Honesty

    • being truthful and open with the other person with both big and small things

  • Support.

    • be there for each other always, to cope with tough times and maximize good times; listen to each other, and reaffirm/reassure that you’re there for one another

In the big picture, we all crave intimacy, need to love and need to be loved!
